Turn Spreadsheets into Smart Work: A Developer’s Guide to the Aspose.Cells Cloud AI Controller
Add AI-powered translation, task decomposition, and text processing to your spreadsheet workflow — with plain REST calls, no ML expertise required.
Every development team hits the same wall: spreadsheet data needs to be translated, summarized, categorized, or reorganized before it’s useful to downstream systems. Traditionally, that meant custom scripts, brittle regex chains, or expensive manual work.
Aspose.Cells Cloud AI Controller changes that. It wraps powerful AI capabilities — translation, task planning, text processing — into a handful of clean REST endpoints. Upload a spreadsheet or send raw text, and get intelligent results back. No model hosting, no prompt engineering, no infrastructure to maintain.
This post walks through the three foundational APIs every developer should know, with runnable examples in cURL, C#, and Python.
1. What Does the AI Controller Do?
The AIController (source: src/Aspose.Cells.Cloud.MicroService/Controllers/AIController.cs) provides AI-powered spreadsheet and text processing APIs. It handles three core scenarios:
| # | Scenario | Endpoint | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Task Decomposition | PUT /v4.0/cells/ai/task/decompose |
Converts a natural-language task description into a structured project plan (Excel file with ID, subject, assignee, duration, dependencies) |
| 2 | Spreadsheet Translation | PUT /v4.0/cells/ai/translate/spreadsheet |
Translates all text content in a spreadsheet to a target language while preserving structure, formulas, and formatting |
| 3 | Text File Translation | PUT /v4.0/cells/ai/translate/text-file |
Translates raw text or a text file to a target language — supports both file upload and direct text input |
All endpoints use the prefix
v4.0/cells/ai/...and require OAuth 2.0 authentication via the Aspose Cloud dashboard.
2. Before You Start
- Get credentials: Register at the Aspose Cloud Dashboard, create an Application, and grab your
Client IDandClient Secret. - Install an SDK (optional — cURL works fine too):
<!-- .NET -->
<PackageReference Include="Aspose.Cells-Cloud" Version="25.x" />
# Python
pip install asposecellscloud
3. Endpoint 1: AI Task Decomposition
Route: PUT /v4.0/cells/ai/task/decompose
This endpoint takes a natural-language description of a project or task list, then uses AI to break it down into a structured plan following SMART criteria. The output is a formatted Excel file with columns: ID, Subject, Assignee, Estimated Duration, Description, Dependencies.
It’s perfect for project managers who want to turn a rough idea (“build a new feature with backend, frontend, and testing”) into a ready-to-import task list for tools like Redmine, Jira, or Trello.
cURL
# Get token
curl -X POST "https://api.aspose.cloud/connect/token" \
-d "grant_type=client_credentials" \
-d "client_id=YOUR_CLIENT_ID" \
-d "client_secret=YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET"
# Decompose a task
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/task/decompose" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '"Build a user authentication system with login, registration, password reset, and OAuth integration. Estimate 40 hours total."' \
-o tasks.xlsx
C# / .NET
using Aspose.Cells.Cloud.SDK.Api;
var cellsApi = new CellsApi("YOUR_CLIENT_ID", "YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET");
string taskDescription = "Build a user authentication system with login, registration, " +
"password reset, and OAuth integration. Estimate 40 hours total.";
// The API returns an Excel file stream with the structured task plan
using Stream result = cellsApi.DecomposeUserTask(taskDescription);
using var outFile = File.Create("tasks.xlsx");
result.CopyTo(outFile);
Console.WriteLine("Task plan generated: tasks.xlsx");
Python
from asposecellscloud.apis.cells_api import CellsApi
import os
instance = CellsApi(
os.getenv('CellsCloudClientId'),
os.getenv('CellsCloudClientSecret'))
task_description = (
"Build a user authentication system with login, registration, "
"password reset, and OAuth integration. Estimate 40 hours total."
)
# Returns an Excel file with structured task breakdown
result = instance.decompose_user_task(task_description)
with open("tasks.xlsx", "wb") as f:
f.write(result.read())
print("Task plan saved to tasks.xlsx")
What you get: An Excel file with a professionally formatted table — each row is a sub-task with estimated hours, assignee suggestions, and dependency links.
4. Endpoint 2: Spreadsheet Translation
Route: PUT /v4.0/cells/ai/translate/spreadsheet
Translates all text content in a spreadsheet to a target language. The AI preserves cell positions, formulas, formatting, and multi-sheet structure. Only the human-readable text gets translated — formulas like =SUM(A1:A10) stay intact.
Supported target languages use standard ISO codes: es (Spanish), fr (French), de (German), zh (Chinese), ja (Japanese), etc.
cURL
# Translate an Excel file from English to Spanish
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/translate/spreadsheet?targetLanguage=es" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-F "file=@report.xlsx" \
-o report_translated.xlsx
C# / .NET
using Aspose.Cells.Cloud.SDK.Api;
using Aspose.Cells.Cloud.SDK.Request;
var cellsApi = new CellsApi("YOUR_CLIENT_ID", "YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET");
var request = new TranslateSpreadsheetRequest(
spreadsheet: "report.xlsx",
targetLanguage: "fr"); // Translate to French
using Stream result = cellsApi.TranslateSpreadsheet(request);
using var outFile = File.Create("report_translated.xlsx");
result.CopyTo(outFile);
Python
from asposecellscloud.apis.cells_api import CellsApi
import os
instance = CellsApi(
os.getenv('CellsCloudClientId'),
os.getenv('CellsCloudClientSecret'))
# Translate to German
with open("report.xlsx", "rb") as f:
result = instance.translate_spreadsheet(
file=f,
target_language="de",
local_outpath="report_translated.xlsx")
print("Translated file saved.")
Key benefit: Multi-sheet workbooks are fully supported. The output file is named {original}_translated.{ext} automatically.
5. Endpoint 3: Text File Translation
Route: PUT /v4.0/cells/ai/translate/text-file
Translates plain text content — either uploaded as a file or sent directly in the request body. Useful for translating documentation, notes, CSV content, or any text-based data.
Two input modes:
- File upload: Send a
.txtfile viamultipart/form-data→ get a translated.txtfile back - Direct text: Send raw text in the request body → get translated text in the response
cURL (File Upload)
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/translate/text-file?targetLanguage=ja" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-F "file=@readme.txt" \
-o readme_translated.txt
cURL (Direct Text)
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/translate/text-file?targetLanguage=zh" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: text/plain" \
-d "Hello, welcome to our product documentation. This guide covers setup and configuration."
Response body contains the translated text directly.
Python
# File upload mode
with open("readme.txt", "rb") as f:
result = instance.translate_text_file(
file=f,
target_language="ko",
local_outpath="readme_translated.txt")
# Direct text mode
result = instance.translate_text_content(
content="Hello world, this is a test.",
target_language="fr")
print(result) # Prints translated text
6. Quick Walkthrough: Translate a Multinational Report
Imagine you have a financial report in English (Q3_Report.xlsx) that needs to be distributed to teams in Spain, France, and Germany.
Step 1: Translate to Spanish:
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/translate/spreadsheet?targetLanguage=es" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-F "file=@Q3_Report.xlsx" \
-o Q3_Report_es.xlsx
Step 2: Translate to French:
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/translate/spreadsheet?targetLanguage=fr" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-F "file=@Q3_Report.xlsx" \
-o Q3_Report_fr.xlsx
Step 3: Translate to German:
curl -X PUT "https://api.aspose.cloud/v4.0/cells/ai/translate/spreadsheet?targetLanguage=de" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-F "file=@Q3_Report.xlsx" \
-o Q3_Report_de.xlsx
Three commands, three localized reports — all with formulas and formatting preserved. That’s the power of AI-driven spreadsheet translation.
7. Key Benefits
- Zero AI infrastructure: No models to host, no GPUs to provision. The AI runs on Aspose’s cloud.
- Structure preservation: Translation doesn’t break your spreadsheet — formulas, charts, and layout stay intact.
- Flexible input: Accept both file uploads and raw text for maximum compatibility.
- Project planning in seconds: Turn vague task descriptions into structured, assignable plans.
- SDK support: Official SDKs for .NET, Python, and Java — or use plain REST with cURL.
8. Error Handling
| Status | Meaning | Typical cause |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Bad Request | Missing or invalid targetLanguage, empty content, or malformed task description |
| 401 | Unauthorized | Authentication failed or credentials missing |
| 500 | Server Error | AI service temporarily unavailable or spreadsheet processing error |
Always check the response status and handle errors gracefully in production code.
9. What’s Next?
The AI Controller has three more powerful endpoints for advanced scenarios:
ai/report/analysis— Automatically analyzes spreadsheet data and generates professional Markdown reportsai/summarize/spreadsheet— Creates intelligent summaries of large workbooksai/categorize/spreadsheet— Classifies column data into logical groups (e.g., expense categorization)
Plus, you can bring your own AI endpoint (DeepSeek, custom OpenAI-compatible services) for translation. All of this is covered in the Advanced Guide.
Get started now: grab your credentials from the Aspose Cloud Dashboard and run the examples above. You’ll have AI-powered spreadsheet processing in minutes.
